An uproar ensued in the Election Commission of Pakistan, on Monday, when opposition and government rejected each other’s proposed nominees for appointment.
While the committee decided to inform Prime Minister Imran Khan about the proposed names, the opposition members suggested that the matter be sent to the Supreme Court of Pakistan instead of PM Khan.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Shireen Mazari expressed that the government had devised a way to achieve harmony by letting the opposition select a member from Balochistan and they would select someone from Sindh.
She added, “Opposition wants to bring its member from the Sindh.” A constitutional crisis has reared its head over appointments in the ECP.
As per sources, new members have not yet been appointed even after six months of the retirement of former ECP members.
On June 11, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif had put forward names for vacant ECP posts from Sindh and Balochistan. He had proposed the names of Abdul Rasool Memon; Khalid Javed and Noorul Haq Qureshi from Sindh.
For the vacant post from Balochistan, he had nominated Shah Mohammad Jatoi; Salahuddin Mengal and Mohammad Rauf Ata.
In a letter sent to Prime Minister Imran Khan, Sharif had forwarded this list of reviewed names and said that the constitutional responsibility would not be fulfilled if consensus was not reached.
It said, “You levelled false and baseless allegations over the previous nominees, and declared the person ineligible, which was nominated by your own foreign minister.” “Such remarks can easily be given as well against the names, which you proposed,” the letter maintained.
