TOBA TEK SINGH: Toxic liquor has so far claimed the lives of at least 41 people in Muhallah Mubarikabad, while 20 others are still fighting for their lives at Faisalabad’s Allied Hospital and TT Singh’s District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital. According to TT Singh DHQ Hospital Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Muhammad Asim Saleemi, 149 people were affected in the incident that occurred on Monday evening.
“A state of emergency has been declared at the hospital and the best available medical treatment is being provided to the affected persons,” he added.
TT Singh District Coordination Officer (DCO) Amir Ejaz Akbar said that those who fell unconscious were being treated at the DHQ Hospital and Allied Hospital, and were in a life-threatening situation.
Upon being informed about the incident the other day, Rescue 1122, police and civil administration reached the localities and shifted the affected people to the hospitals.
In Mubarikabad and other adjoining areas, several people consumed liquor on Christmas and soon fell ill. They had to be hospitalised for immediate medical care.
Meanwhile, the city police have registered a case and launched a crackdown on brewers and bootleggers supplying toxic liquor in the district. Sources said that the law enforcers have managed to round up some of the suppliers. The TT Singh DCO and the district police officer said that investigation into the incident was underway and those involved would be taken to task.
