Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Raja Zafarul Haq on Wednesday tabled the no-confidence resolution against Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani in a session called by President Arif Alvi.
Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif — who is chairing today’s session — directed senators who were in favour of the resolution to stand on their seats. About 64 senators stood up in support of the motion to table the no-confidence resolution.
There are 100 senators attending the session. At the start of the session, 64 senators rose in favour of the no-confidence motion.
Voting is taking place through a secret ballot with a total of 53 votes required to remove the chairman and deputy chairman.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan, a no-confidence motion has been submitted against the senate chairman, demanding he steps aside after only being in office for over a year.
