Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Faisal Vawda, on Friday, launched a “Self-Employment Scheme” for his NA-249 constituency in Baldia Town, Karachi. During his address to a cheque-distribution ceremony, the federal minister said that the scheme had been introduced to provide business opportunities to jobless people in the constituency. During the first phase, he added, Rs30 million would be distributed among nearly 1,000 people. He announced that this amount would be given as an interest-free loan. Vawda added that the Benazir Income Support Programme and other such programmes were good yet the scheme he had introduced was better. His scheme would help beneficiaries initiate their own livelihood instead of lining up to get a small stipend every month. The minister noted that the PTI was supporting people in line with “Islamic teachings;” helping people earn their livelihood “without involvement of interest.” Earlier on Thursday night, Punjab Chief Minister’s spokesperson, Shahbaz Gill, took to Twitter to share a poster for Vawda’s scheme. He added it would not use any funds from the federal or provincial governments.
