Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood on Monday said that religious seminaries across the country were being associated with the Ministry of Education, and that 10 regional offices would be opened for the registration of madrassas.
Addressing a press conference, he said that unregistered madrassas would be shut down, and added that the government wanted to improve the quality of madrassa education, for which it would do everything possible. The minister asserted that the registration of madrassas had no connection with the 18th amendment.
On April 30, the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) compiled a report on geo-tagging and registration of all the madrassas in Pakistan, and announced to bring them under the Ministry of Education.
