Despite having many laws against underage marriage, the traditional practice of marrying underage girls’ is continues in Sindh, especially in the rural areas of Northern Sindh. One such attempt to marry off an underage girl was foiled by Napar-Kot Police in Shikarpur district on Thursday, where they recovered a 10-year-old bride and arrested the 45-years old groom from the Khanpur area. Station House Officer Imtiaz Khuhawar told this scribe that after receiving information, the police immediately raided the Mahro Marri village and succeeded in arresting the groom, identified as Soomaar Soomro, a resident of Younisabad village. He said the police also recovered 10-year-old girl identified as Malookan, daughter of Hanif Shaikh, and shifted her to the Shikarpur Women’s Complaint Cell. He said the would-be groom was still in police custody. Soomaar Soomro said at the police station that he had paid Rs 250,000 for the girl four years ago, while nikah was also performed at the time of the payment. He said he was there to get the bride when the police arrested him. The grandmother of the victim girl avoided talking to journalists on the occasion.
