Malnutrition claimed six more lives of children in the Tharparkar region of Sindh on Tuesday as the death toll of children continues to soar. According to sources in the health department, the children died within 24 hours. The deaths were reported from Civil Hospital Mithi and other areas of the district. The deceased included newborns and children aged up to three months. With this, the death toll in Tharparkar in the first two days of July has increased to eight while 422 children have lost their lives since January 1, 2019. According to the health department, every year, 1,500 children lose their battle to malnutrition, infections and a dismal lack of proper medical facilities in the remote region. A UNICEF report had lamented that Pakistan was among countries with the highest infant mortality rate where as many as 22 infants died before turning one-month old. Eight of these countries are in Africa while two are in Asia.
