KARACHI: The Indian state of Assam on Saturday designated Swati Bidhan Baruah as the first transgender judge of the state.
After the appointment, Swati also heard the first case at Guwahati District Court (Guwahati Lok Adalat).
Baruah, who is also the third Indian transgender to hold the judiciary position, stated, “The position did not come to him easily.”
The newly appointed judge further said that she had to fight a legal battle to achieve this.
Before this, Joyita Mondal Mahi from West Bengal and Vidya Kamble from Maharashtra were appointed as the first and second transgender judge, respectively.
According to The New Indian Express, Swati is a transgender activist who has been fighting for long for the rights of the transgender community, it further added that she will mediate in pre-litigation cases related to finance companies.
