ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) suspended senator and former finance minister Ishaq Dar’s senate membership today (Tuesday).
The CJP was hearing a case pertaining to the acceptance of Ishaq Dar’s nomination papers for the recently held Senate elections.
The CJP inquired during the hearing where Mr Dar was. Dar’s lawyer then presented a medical certificate that claimed the former minister was not well enough to attend court.
The bench dismissed the certificate and the CJP remarked that Ishaq Dar would one day have to appear in court.
The case itself pertains to a petition PPP’s Nawazish Pirzada filed that beseeched the Supreme Court to suspend the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision which allowed Dar to contest the Senate elections held on the 3rd of March.
The LHC had granted Dar permission to contest the elections in a verdict on the 17th of February. The LHC’s verdict dismissed a returning officer’s order that barred Dar from contesting elections.
