ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court judge Justice Ejaz Afzal retired on Monday after reaching superannuation.
While addressing a full court reference, the judge lamented the poor state of healthcare in Pakistan.
He said that Basic Health Units (BHUs) all over the country were marred by a dearth of staff and by a lack of medicines.
He also said that the poor are forced to go to urban areas to seek treatment because their areas lack adequate healthcare infrastructure.
The Judge also castigated doctors for focusing solely on money and referring patients to their own private clinics and laboratories.
The esteemed judge served on the Peshawar High Court’s bench for nine years and was later made Chief Justice of the province in 2009.
He was then promoted to the Supreme Court on the 17th of November, 2011.
