LAHORE: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on December 7 will hold suo motu proceedings on kidnapping of children in Punjab.
The bench will hold proceedings at the SC’s Lahore Registry.
It has already given a month’s time to advocate general of Punjab to submit a report about progress in investigation of child abduction cases in the province.
The apex court had taken a suo motu notice of kidnapping incidents on August 3 and had constituted a high-level committee, headed by the advocate general of Punjab, to enquire about the recovery of kidnapped children. The court had also sought a report from the committee on the next hearing.
The Punjab Police inspector general had submitted a report that between 2011 and 2016, as many as 6,793 children had been abducted from across Punjab, of which 6,654 were recovered and investigation was underway in 139 cases. During this year, four children were abducted for ransom. So far, during the current year, 767 children had been abducted, of which 715 were recovered. According to the report, the police were searching for the remaining children.
A majority of the children were kidnapped from Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur and Bahawal Nagar, the IG had said.
