Prime Minister Imran Khan Saturday, while advising the nation to follow the safety instructions issued by the government, said there is no need to panic.
On his Twitter account, the prime minister assured the nation that he is personally overseeing the measures to deal with coronavirus and would address them soon. “I want to inform the nation I am personally overseeing measures to deal with COVID 19 & will address the nation soon. I would advise people to follow safety instructions issued by our govt. While there is a need for caution there is no need for panic,” he posted on his Twitter handle.
The prime minister reiterated that the government is alert to the danger and has put in place adequate health protocols for the public safety. “We are alert to the dangers & have put in place sufficient protocols for the safety and health of our people. The WHO has commended our efforts as being amongst the best in the world,” he added.
A day earlier on Friday, a National Security Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan had decided to close all educational institutions including all public and private schools, universities, vocational institutions and madaris in the country with an immediate effect and till April 5. It also decided to close borders with Iran and Afghanistan for two weeks in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
The NSC had also set up a National Coordination Committee to effectively curb the spread of coronavirus by evaluating the situation on day-to-day basis. The meeting had slapped a ban on public gatherings and suspended flight operations from all airports except Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi for international travels.
