LAHORE: The directors, faculty staff and students congratulated the appointment of Dr Taqi Zahid Butt as a new acting vice chancellor of Punjab University.
According to the reports, the Punjab University teachers, students and staff greatly appreciated the fair and timely judgment of the Lahore High Court (LHC). They celebrated the removal of Mujahid Kamran as acting vice chancellor by distributing sweets. The directors and the professors from the Hailey Collage of Commerce, the Law Collage, IER, the engineering and other departments appreciated the appointment of Dr Taqi as a new vice chancellor.
Prof Emeritus and Dr Bushra Khan were the senior most professors and could be the new acting vice chancellor of the Lahore College for Women University Lahore. Dr Bushra Khan has already challenged the seniority of the vice chancellor of Dr Uzma Quraishi in the LHC. Dr Nazra Sultana, senior most professor of mathematics and dean has already replaced the acting VC Dr Zahoorul Hassan Dogar as VC of Sargodha University.
Dogar was the PRO-Vice Chancellor and was posted as VC on the retirement of former VC Dr Akram Ch. There is no professor in the Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology Multan that could be posted as the vice chancellor. However, it could not be confirmed. Punjab University senior professor, welcoming the LHC decision, said the court should also look into many other aspects like illegal appointments in varsities, out of turn promotions, nepotism and violation of other rules.
He said that the PU vice chancellor didn’t appoint pro-VCs in the university. The same was the situation at the LCWU that was being run without a pro-VC, treasurer, controller and the registrar. He added that the situation at other universities was not better. He said the Punjab government should order strict audit of the universities because there were severe violations and charges of corruption on the position holders.
Earlier, the LHC on Thursday removed acting vice-chancellors (VCs) of four public sector universities of Punjab, including the Punjab University’s acting VC Dr Mujahid Kamran, and directed the chancellor to appoint the senior-most professors as acting VCs within seven days till the appointment of permanent VCs.
While accepting the writ petition filed by Dr Aurangzeb Alamgir, Samee Uzair, Dr Shahbaz Cheema and Prof Wasif Khan through Advocate Saad Rasool, Justice Shahid Karim also struck down the process initiated by the Higher Education Department (HED) for the appointment of the vice chancellors at four public sector universities of Punjab with direction to the HED to initiate the entire process afresh in 30 days.
