The Election Commission of Pakistan tribunal will be resuming judicial/legal proceedings from Tuesday.
Proceedings had been suspended for two months due to the coronavirus. However, the cause list has now been issued.
The scrutiny committee will resume proceeding on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) foreign funding case on Tuesday, based on the investigation carried out till March 16.
The commission has summoned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal in reference to the PTI case.
The issue of the cases’ petitioner, Akbar S Babar, allegedly receiving threats will also be taken up today.
Meanwhile, the tribunal will also hear the case against PML-N’s alleged foreign funding, as well as four applications seeking disqualification of Federal Minister Faisal Vawda.
The minister has been accused of allegedly submitting a false affidavit before the election authority.
A petitioner had approached the ECP earlier this year in the wake of a news report that claimed that Vawda had dual nationality when he filed his nomination papers to contest the 2018 general elections.
A now estranged founding member of the PTI, Babar had filed the foreign funding case in 2014, alleging that nearly $3 million in illegal foreign funds were collected through two offshore companies and that money was sent through illegal ‘hundi’ channels from the Middle East to accounts of ‘PTI employees’.
He had also alleged that the foreign accounts that used to collect funds were concealed from the annual audit reports submitted to the ECP.
The case against PML-N’s foreign funding was filed by PTI Parliamentary Secretary Farrukh Habib – it also includes the PPP. Habib has accused the two parties of illegally receiving funds from the US and the UK.
