Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Husain and Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi have moved the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging the jurisdiction of the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
In their joint petition, the Chaudhry brothers have alleged that the anti-graft watchdog has turned into an institution of ‘political engineering’. They underlined that the courts have earlier ruled on the NAB’s role and erroneous methods of investigation. They further stressed that the NAB chairman has once again ordered a probe into a 19-year-old matter, noting that the anti-corruption body has no authority to reopen an almost two-decade-old case which had already been closed.
Noting that they belong to a political family, the Chaudhry brothers underscored that they have held important posts, including that of the prime minister and Punjab chief minister, in the past. They requested the LHC to declare the NAB’s move to reopen the almost two-decade-old case related to assets beyond means as illegal.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court Karachi registry on Wednesday granted interim bail to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Khursheed Shah’s son MPA Farukh Ahmed Shah in assets beyond income case. Later, the court adjourned the case till next week and ordered NAB not to arrest Farrukh Shah.
