The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday issued the final result of presidential election. President-elect Dr Arif Alvi secured victory after receiving 352 votes against opposition candidates’ Maulana Fazlur Rehman (184 votes) and Aitzaz Ahsan (124 votes).
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) retired Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza announced the result.
Also on Wednesday, Alvi forwarded his resignation to the National Assembly secretariat. He had won the election from NA-247 in Karachi.
Alvi will succeed outgoing President Mamnoon Hussain whose term expires on Saturday. The new president will take oath of office on Sunday.
In the election on Tuesday, Alvi received 212 votes in the National Assembly and the Senate. His rivals Fazlur Rehman and Aitzaz Ahsan bagged 131 and 81 votes, respectively. The count for Alvi, Rahman and Aitzaz after addition of provincial assembly votes rose to 352, 184, and 124.
