Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday criticised the federal government, saying that it was incapable of running the country.
Talking to the media outside the accountability court after his hearing, Zardari termed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Punjab President Rana Sanaullah’s arrest as an “injustice”.
“What happened with Rana Sanaullah is an injustice. I condemn it. The allegation against him is indecorous,” the PPP leader said. “Do you think Rana Sanaullah would transport contraband in his car?”
Zardari recalled that he too was slapped with a similar accusation and it took him five years to get his name cleared. “In my case, nothing was recovered. In this one, however, it was planted,” he said.
Zardari noted that punishment in his case was death sentence, and the same was the case with Rana Sanaullah. “The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) didn’t arrest me, I actually turned myself in,” he clarified. Commenting on the arrest of the opposition leaders, the PPP leader said, “We will persistently fight and we are doing so even after turning ourselves in.”
“Now, they have taxed cars as well. They are realising that they are incapable of running the country,” he said.
In response to a reporter’s question as to whether he had listened to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s speech, the PPP co-chair said, “Why should I listen to a silly person? I don’t have time for that.” However, he chose not to answer a question regarding replacing the Senate chairman.
Earlier, the accountability court of Islamabad granted NAB 13-day physical remand of Zardari in Park Lane and fake accounts cases.
Judge Muhammad Arshad Malik of the accountability court took up the case as Zardari’s physical remand ended on Tuesday.
According to the NAB, Zardari was arrested on the charges of purchasing 2,460 kanals of land in Islamabad through Park Lane Company back in March 2009. Zardari has more than 25% shares in Park Lane Company, reports said.
