NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on Friday, urged Pakistan and India to build on the positive momentum generated after Indian fighter pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, was released by Pakistan captured by its forces on Wednesday, earlier in the day.
The UN chief asked the two estranged neighbours to engage in constructive dialogue on de-escalating the tensions between them.
A statement by his deputy spokesperson, Farhan Aziz Haq, maintained that the UN’s “good offices remain available should both sides agree.”

With reference to the Indian Air Force Wing Commander captured after his warplane was shot down by Pakistan Air Force (PAF), he said, “We welcome the news of the Pakistani authorities releasing the captive Indian pilot today.”
Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced his decision to hand over the Indian pilot to his country on Thursday as an offering of peace across the border. His decision was appreciated by leaders around the world.
