ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday discussed the prospects of the caretaker government for the upcoming General Elections with Opposition Leader in National Assembly (NA) Syed Khursheed Shah.
According to sources, Abbasi and Shah met at the Speaker’s chamber in National Assembly. Khursheed Shah however expects the negotiations on the subject to continue for a few more weeks since there is still some time left in the formation of the caretaker governments, which are due to take charge on June 1.
The caretaker governments are decided after consultations between the premier and the opposition leader. Similarly, in the provinces, the chief ministers and the respective opposition leaders consult with each other to decide the caretaker provincial chief ministers.
How caretaker governments are formed in Pakistan?
The process defined under the 18th amendment states that the opposition and the government both provide three nominations each and they can either decide on one of those six names. In case the two fail to reach an agreement, the decision is left to be made by the Supreme Court.
