ISLAMABAD: According to a World Bank report, more than 20 thousand premature deaths per annum occur due to Air Pollution in Pakistan.
The report titled as ‘Cleaning Pakistan’s Air: Policy Options to Address the Cost of Outdoor Air Pollution’ states that Pakistan is the only South Asian country where urbanisation is on the rise, while increased motorisation and energy usage is polluting the atmosphere.
The report further addresses that air pollution, particularly in large urban centres, leads to environmental degradation while it also damages the population’s health and quality of life.
According to the report, the levels of pollutants such sulfur dioxide (SO2), and lead (Pb) were much higher in comparison to other countries in the South Asian region e.g. Sri Lanka, Bhutan and and India.
