KARACHI: The tussle between the Sindh Home Ministry and Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) AD Khawaja has deepened after the Sindh government writes a letter to the IG asking him to provide some space at the Central Police Office (CPO) building to establish a camp office for Minister for Home, Agriculture, Mines and Minerals Sohail Anwar Sial.
According to sources, the yearlong rift between the Sindh government and the provincial top cop worsened when Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP’s) senior leader Sohail Anwar Sial assumed the charge as the provincial home minister last month. “Moreover, the home minister had lashed out at the IG in a press conference right after assuming the charge,” they added.
In the letter issued by the Services General Administration and Coordination Department, the authorities concerned have requested the Sindh IG to allocate the old office of the additional inspector general (AIG) at the CPO building as a camp office for the provincial home minister citing life threats to the minister.
The letter added that the current office of the Sindh home minister was located in old barracks of the Pakistan Secretariat Building, which is vulnerable given the prevailing law and order situation in Sindh, particularly Karachi.
Meanwhile, sources at the CPO have said that the senior police officials, including the IG, are unhappy with the government’s decision.”
“There are much more safe places in the city to set up a camp office for the home minister but they have selected the CPO building to counter and control the IG Office,” they said.
According to insiders, the IG had also written a letter to the Sindh government asking it to establish the camp office for the minister at some other secure place instead of the Central Police Office building.
However, talking to the media on Friday, the IG said termed the home minister his “boss” and rejected the news regarding the letter written to the government for alternative places.
