LAHORE: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Saturday deplored the “traditional cold response” of the Nawab Town Police Station and indifferent attitude of senior police officials to the abduction of Dr Tehsina Zafar’s child, and warned to stern action on part of the doctors’ community if the nominated culprits were not brought to book and the child not recovered.
The PMA office-bearers called an emergency meeting on the issue on Saturday. The meeting, chaired by PMA Lahore President Dr Muhammad Tanveer Anwar, passed a resolution on the occasion and announced to hold a protest at the Lahore General Hospital tomorrow (Monday) against the incident and law enforcers.
Nawab Town police had registered a case of kidnapping four days ago against Dr Tehsina’s former husband Masood Pervaiz and his four unidentified accomplices.
As per the first information report (FIR), Masood and his accomplices came to Dr Tehsina’s house situated in Nawab Town area and – after an exchange of harsh words between the former couple – Pervaiz and his accomplices kidnapped the minor on gunpoint.
Upon being informed, the police reached the spot and launched in enquiry. Later, the police registered a case against five persons, but did not trace or arrest any person until the filing of this report, sources said.
Sources also said that Dr Tehsina had already obtained a divorce through court a few months ago. They said that her former husband had a criminal mind and Dr Tehsina was mentally disturbed because of his suspicious activities, which prompted her to file for a divorce.
The PMA expressed grave concern about the abducted child’s safety and demanded Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Punjab Police inspector general to take notice of the incident.
Talking to Daily Times, PMA General Secretary Dr Shahid Malik said that Dr Tehsina was the former joint secretary of the PMA Punjab chapter and had been working at the Lahore General Hospital nowadays as a senior medical officer (SMO). He said that as PMA members, it was their duty to take action against the unlawful activity. He added that Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf had said after the incident that the police would recover the minor within 24 hours and arrest the culprits soon, but no action had been taken against anyone despite a lapse of four days.
