A meeting of the parliamentary committee on appointment of superior court judges on Friday decided to conduct interviews of the nominated judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) prior to their appointment, a private TV channel reported on Friday.
Members of the parliamentary committee in a meeting decided to interview the judges whose names were in consideration for appointment at the high court. The meeting officially gave authority to the committee to amend the rules and regulations pertaining to the appointment of the judges. Any judge who is asked to show up for an interview but doesn’t do so will have his nomination cancelled, it was decided.
The Judicial Commission, which would in the past nominate the candidates, will continue to do so in future as well and will be sending its nominations to the parliamentary committee. However, the committee now can summon the candidates nominated by the judicial commission for the post of judge in the superior courts for an interview.
Previously, the committee did not have mandate to do interview of any person nominated for the post of judge with the high courts.
