MUZAFARRABAD: Social media star Qandeel Baloch’s brother told police in a recorded statement that he was not involved in her death, saying that he was in Karachi at the time.
“I was in Karachi on duty when the murder took place,” Aslam Shaheen said on Wednesday. He had been granted interim bail prior to appearing at the station to record his statement.
Waseem Azeem, the brother who was charged with Qandeel’s murder had earlier pleaded not guilty in court against the charges. Waseem had allegedly strangled his sister in July, claiming that she had brought shame on their family for her provocative actions and stories on social media.
Baloch had been an extremely polarising figure for Pakistani society, with some parts demeaning her for her actions and other factions applauding and supporting her daring actions which challenged contemporary social norms.
