KARACHI: The Supreme Court has directed the Sindh government to evolve a mechanism to prepare to ensure that pensionry benefits, pension book and GP funds are paid to employees on the date of their retirement.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Amir Hani was hearing the application of Samandar Ali Hasbani against non-payment of his pension benefits at the apex court’s Karachi registry.
The bench that also comprised Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Faisal Arab observed that there is no mechanism provided in the departments to prepare the pension cases and disburse the pensionary benefits to employees on the date of their retirement. The Accountant General Stated that there is no computerization of pension cases and besides, there are lapses on the part of the staff as well.
The judges were of the opinion that the same is the position in districts where district accounts officers do not have any mechanism to entertain the pension cases.
The court, therefore, asked the Advocate General to prepare SOPs ensuring that the pension rules are followed and on the date of retirement, an employee gets his pension.
The accountant general, the finance secretary and the S&GAD shall be participating in the proposed meeting to be conducted by the AG for placing on record the SOPs, which after examining will be made order of this court, ruled the court. It ordered that the AG shall also get in touch with the secretary establishment, who has developed some mechanism for ensuring that the pensions are released to the employees on the date of their retirement. The hearing of the case was adjourned tillMarch 17.
