At least seven people reportedly died and dozens more were injured in separate rain-related incidents across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), five people, including two children and a woman, were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Two deaths were reported in Shangrila and one each in Buner, Mansehra and Abbottabad. In more rain-related incidents, 18 people, including six women and one child, sustained injuries.
Heavy rainfall in KP also caused damage to five houses, two huts and three school buildings. Different areas of Chitral, including Tirich Mir and Kosht, were closed off for traffic due to flooding.
Over in Punjab, at least two people died and dozens more sustained injuries.
As per the reports, the roof of a house collapsed in Sargodha, resulting in the death of two children. Five more roof collapse incidents were reported in Sheikhupura and officials placed the number of injured at 10.
Incessant rainfall across Punjab has led to power outages in many major cities.
According to the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD), 54 millimetres (mm) of rain was recorded in Tajpura, 39mm in Lakhshmi Chowk, 34mm in Pani Wala Talab, 33mm on Upper Mall, 32mm in Farrukhabad, 26mm in Mughalpura and 25mm in Chowk Nakhuda areas.
There seems to be no respite in sight, as the Met Office has predicted more heavy rain in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur over the next 24 hours.
On the other hand, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted possible heavy rainfall in Karachi today (Monday).
PMD Director General Sardar Sarfaraz told a private news channel that Karachi would likely receive heavy rainfall today.
According to a report, weather in the city will be mainly cloudy on Monday and there will be chances of rain and thunderstorm in the afternoon or evening.
The port city received drizzle in some areas on Sunday morning, including Meethdar, Kharadar, Tower, Saddar, University Road, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, SITE and adjoining areas.
According to the report, isolated heavy rainfall is also expected in lower Sindh, including Mirpur Khas, Thatta, Hyderabad and Karachi divisions in Sindh and Kalat and Makran divisions of Balochistan on Monday and Tuesday.
The PMD also warned of heavy rainfall that may trigger urban flooding in Karachi, Thatta and Hyderabad divisions, and flash flooding in Kalat, Sibi and Zhob divisions during the period.
The Karachi Port Trust and Port Qasim Authority have issued safety alerts for docked ships to double the ropes and anchors weighing them down in order to avoid damage to the ships.
The Maritime Security Agency has also advised fishermen to stay alert and cautious. The KMC and DMCs have cancelled the leaves of all their staff members and are on high alert.
The PMD has warned of a possible storm and the city’s authorities are readying themselves.
