Meesha Shafi’s appeal seeking the transfer of defamation suit filed by Ali Zafar was accepted by sessions court in Lahore on Wednesday. Additional Sessions Judge Amjad Ali Shah will hold a hearing on May 11 regarding the defamation case.
The application filed by Shafi stated a lack of trust in Additional District and Sessions Judge Shakeel Ahmad. Ahmad has been hearing the case, arguing through her counsel that she believed the judge was displaying partially towards Zafar.
The transfer application was filed on May 4, and the verdict was reserved on the same day.
Shafi stated in her application that Justice Ahmad had mentioned displeasure with her lawyer and that too for no reason. It further stated that the judge was with the witnesses while recording their testimonies and assisted them in furbishing their answers in the defamation case. The judge also fined Shafi’s lawyer Rs10,000. These were the reasons that Shafi filed an application to transfer the defamation case to another court.
The defamation case filed by Zafar stated that Shafi put baseless and unfounded allegations of sexual harassment against him on twitter on April 19, 2018. These allegations damaged his image and brought pain to his family.
A legal notice was served to her but she didn’t take the tweet down and apologise to Zafar within 14 days.
Following this, Zafar had filed a defamation case against Shafi and asked the court to direct her to part Rs1 billion in damages to him.
