SRINAGAR: A complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama district in held Kashmir on the first martyrdom anniversary of a freedom fighter, Omais Ahmad Sheikh, who was martyred by Indian troops in Ajas area of Bandipora district.
Last year, Omais Ahmad Shiekh alias Abu Hamza, son of Farooq Ahmad, of Chatapora village was killed in an encounter with forces. Kashmir Media Service (KMS) reported that shops remained closed while transport was absent from the roads.
Pro-freedom songs were played over the loudspeakers of mosques to pay tribute to the martyred youth. Moreover, clashes erupted early morning after Indian forces deployed in the area fired teargas shells at a group of youngster placing banners over the grave of Omais. The youth responded by hurling rocks at the forces. Clashes ended after additional forces were deployed in the area.
