MIRPUR KHAS: The Tuberculosis has now become a global issue and posing big threat to the people with death of 1.7 million every year in the world.
Coordinator of Australian Multicultural charity Dr. Sehrish Memon while talking to Daily Times said that control over spreading Tuberculosis has become a challenge in the world particularly in under developing countries and there is a need of adopting concrete measures for its prevention in order to help in creation of a healthy atmosphere.
Though Tuberculosis is dangerous disease, but it is treatable, she said, adding that sincere efforts were being required to prevent the deadly disease in the country. Dr. Sehrish Memon said that TB is an infectious bacterial disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis, which most commonly affects the lungs. Dr. Sehrish Memon informed that this disease is transmitted from person to person via droplets from the throat and lungs of people with the active respiratory disease.
She said in healthy people, infection with mycobacterium tuberculosis often causes no symptoms, since the person’s immune system acts to wall off the bacteria and the symptoms of active TB of the lung are coughing, sometimes with sputum or blood, chest pains, weakness, weight loss, fever and night sweats, Dr. Sehrish Memon added.
She also said that by adopting the treatment of “Directly Observed Treatment Short Course” (DOTS), jointly introduced by the WHO, National and Provincial Tuberculosis Programmes, the deadly disease could be eradicated from Pakistan as this treatment is also effective in other parts of the world.
Under DOTS, she informed that patient uses the required medicines for eight month in supervision of the doctor or other responsible person.
