KARACHI: The police on Friday chargesheeted Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) MPA Muhammad Kamran, better known as Kamran Farooqui, in illicit weapon and explosive material cases.
Nabi Bakhsh police submitted the interim chargesheet before the administrative judge of an anti-terrorism court (ATC) against the MQM lawmaker for allegedly possessing an unlicensed 9mm pistol and a grenade.
According to police, they arrested Farooqui on December 16, 2016 and recovered a pistol and a hand grenade from his possession. The investigating officer placed seven prosecution witnesses in the chargesheet. While accepting the chargesheet, the judge sent the case to the ATC IX for trial.
The case was registered under Sections 4/5 of the Explosives Act and 23IA of the Sindh Arms Act read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.
Farooqui was off the scene for the last couple of months, since the Rangers had been after him.
He was reportedly wanted in many terrorism-related cases, including the May 12 riots. It is pertinent to mention here that the Rangers had earlier cordoned off party leader Farooq Sattar’s residence in the PIB Colony in a bit to arrest Farooqui, but he was not found there.
