Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman, on Saturday, rejected the proposed hike in gas price by up to 47 per cent.
The PPP senator noted that Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had proposed skyrocketing the gas tariff by up to “45 per cent.”
This decision would further burden masses by Rs 175 billion, she added.
She claimed that the people already reeling from poverty would not be able to endure more inflation.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was fanning protests through its measures, Rehman opined.
It should be noted that earlier on Friday, OGRA proposed a massive hike in gas price between 28 and 47 per cent for the next fiscal year, 2019-20.
With the new gas tariff approved, the gas price for the Sui Northern gas consumers went up by 47 per cent (Rs 236.81 per MMBtu) against the demand of 144 per cent (Rs 722.51 per MMBtu).
Meanwhile, the Sui Southern gas consumers have experienced an increase of 28 per cent (Rs 159.68 MMBtu) against the demand of 30 per cent (Rs 176.41 MMBtu).
