Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar on Saturday signed the Local Government Bill 2019.
Under the new bill, the new municipal system would comprise two categories that include municipal and Mohalla councils in urban areas, and tehsil and village councils in the rural areas.
He informed the masses that the legislation was drafted under the Constitution of Pakistan. “So now the government cannot stop legislation due to pressure from the opposition,” he maintained.
Sarwar stated that, under the new local bodies system, the power has been delegated to the grassroots.
“Public representatives have been truly empowered in the new local bodies system,” he proudly said.
Last week, Punjab Law Minister Basharat Raja said the new system will translate the public’s hopes into reality. Not only will the public be given power at a local level, but they will also be able to solve issues in their areas at their doorstep, he stressed.
