ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday suspended the 1-year jail sentence of former additional and sessions judge Raja Khurram and wife Mehreem Zafar in Tayyaba torture case.
The ex-judge and wife had earlier filed a petition against the 1-year jail and 50-thousand fine sentence to both the accused saying that the verdict was given without proper considerations of provisions of law.
They applicants had also requested that a special division bench be appointed to hear the case.
The IHC accepted the plea and ordered to form a division bench. The bench, which consists of Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Mian Gul Hussain and Justice Aurangzeb, suspended the sentence, while also adjourned the case till May.
On December 29, 2016, Tayyaba, a 10-year-old housemaid, was recovered from the house of the judge after receiving complaints of torture from neighbours.
The issue sparked outrage on social media and led to calls for strict and swift justice.
