ISLAMABAD: Speaking to the media at Bani Gala on Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said that the Supreme Court (SC) should appoint the head of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), and the bureau should become an independent institution.
Imran said that NAB was fuelling corruption in the country. “They continue to let the powerful corrupt go under the excuse of plea bargains,” he said, “NAB’s chairman should resign himself after his failure to provide justice.”
“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had almost 12 corruption cases pending in NAB,” Imran said, adding that if the federal government continues to oversee the matters, NAB would be unable to perform.
“Even the interior minister demanded NAB operations to be overseen by the Supreme Court,” Imran said, “The public and opposition have lost all faith in the bureau. Now even the members of the (federal) government are speaking against it.” The PTI chief also accused Nawaz of lying in the Supreme Court and the National Assembly.
While referring to Dar’s handwritten statement that was given before a magistrate back on April 25, 2000, in which he had alleged that the premier was laundering money during the late 1990s, Imran said that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had already shed light on the premier’s corruption.
The former cricketer said that the entire country believes the PM is corrupt. “But the entire population is also aware of the fact that Nawaz will not be punished,” he added.
Imran said that PTI MNAs’ short attendance in the National Assembly is a form of protest and his party workers were busy working for the public. “Opposition’s job is to question the government in power. We are doing our job,” he said.
