IHCThe Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday turned down bail requests filed by former Pakistan Stock Exchange head Hussain Lawai and Summit Bank senior vice-president Taha Raza.
Both of them had earlier been detained by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for investigation into alleged money-laundering through fake bank accounts.
A two-member IHC bench, comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani and Justice Aamer Farooq, heard the bail applications on Saturday. The bench remarked that the applications were not on merit even on medical grounds. The bench stated that prima facie the accused had a link with the case as they had been serving on important posts.
The detailed judgment stated that corruption had taken root in society like cancer. “If effective measures are not taken to curb it, then the consequences will be devastating for the country. Massive organised corruption has been shattering the economy of the state. It is the fundamental duty of the courts to stop the menace of corruption,” the judgement stated.
