Former finance minister Asad Umar would not be returning to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s cabinet, a private news channel quoted its sources as saying on Tuesday.
Asad Umar had a one-on-one meeting with the premier on Tuesday, sources said, and added that it was part of the efforts to convince him to rejoin the cabinet. However, Asad Umar had not agreed to rejoin the cabinet, the sources said.
The former chief executive officer of Engro, who was handpicked by Imran Khan as the finance minister to improve the economic affairs of the country, was told to resign a few weeks back.
In a tweet, Asad Umar said the premier had offered him the portfolio of the Energy Ministry instead of Finance Ministry as part of a cabinet reshuffle.
“As part of a cabinet reshuffle PM desired that I take the energy minister portfolio instead of finance. However, I have obtained his consent to not take any cabinet position. I strongly believe @ImranKhanPTI is the best hope for Pakistan and inshallah will make a naya Pakistan,” he had tweeted.
