PESHAWAR: Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and parliamentarian Abdul Akbar Khan passed away after prolonged illness on Thursday at the age of 68.
His funeral prayers were offered in his native area of Katlang, district Mardan and he was later laid to rest. The funeral prayers were attended by a large number of people, including senior political leaders.
He was belonging to the small village of Spenkai, in Mardan. His father, Sher Akbar Khan, was a local landlord. Abdul Akbar Khan got married in 1969 and then he married a second time in 2000.
He contested his first election in 1970, using PPP as a platform. He quickly rose to its ranks and after the 1988 General Elections, he was elected KP Assembly (then N.W.F-P Assembly) deputy speaker. He became the KP Assembly speaker in 1993. He also served as parliamentary leader in the KP Assembly from 2002 to 2013.
He was considered to be close to PPP leaders Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto and was believed to be a specialist in constitutional affairs.
