Five police officials were arrested in a murder case on Sunday while 20 other police officials were booked when a suspect was killed during interrogation in the Shehr Sultan police station on Friday.
On Friday, Fiaz Ahmad was taken into custody by the Shehr Sultan police in a murder case though he was not nominated in the first information report. During interrogation, investigation officer Abid Naeem and two constables allegedly tortured him to death. Within hours of the incident, Shehr Sultan Station House Officer (SHO) Aslam Malghani said Fiaz committed suicide in the bathroom of the lock room.
The family of the deceased blocked Karachi-Multan Road for hours and protested against the police. Later, District Police Officer (DPO) Mohammad Hassan Iqbal visited the scene, met with the family and said he had ordered an inquiry into the death. He suspended SHO Malghani, who is neighbor to Chief Minister Usman Buzdar in Taunsa, and posted Malik Khurram Riaz Khar as the SHO.
The police sent the body to hospital for postmortem examination. The DPO said that his team was investigating the matter on merit. He said he would take stern action against those officials if they had been involved in the murder. The family of the deceased claimed that Fiaz was innocent and he was the father of three children.
The DPO said that six officials were held under the murder charge while SHO Malghani and other officials were nominated for negligence. On Saturday, the medical report was issued where doctors said that Fiaz did not die from torture.
