ISLAMABAD: A bill was presented in the Senate on Monday, proposing a constitutional amendment to declare as mandatory the adoption of at least 20 percent recommendations suggested by the Upper House on the money bills forwarded to the National Assembly.
A total of 17 MPs have endorsed the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2020, seeking an amendment in Article 73 of the Constitution, regarding the procedure to deal with a money bill.
According to Article 73 (1A): “After the bill, which can only originate in the National Assembly, has been passed by the Assembly, with or without incorporating the recommendations of the Senate, it is presented to the President, who shall give assent in 10 days.”
The proposal has sought amendment in the aforementioned article, proposing to amend the rule. “Provided that at least twenty percent of the total recommendations made by the Senate shall be incorporated in the bill,” the proposed amendment states.
Adviser to Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan assured the MPs to consider their recommendations.
