Punjab Police Inspector General (IG) Cap (R) Arif Nawaz, on Monday, claimed that the body had no other option but to improve their performance.
There was no room for laziness or negligence, he maintained.
“We have to improve the image of police in the public and for this purpose, Police would have to change their attitude with the public and take further strict steps to control crimes,” Cap Nawaz added.
To achieve this target, practical steps in place of mere rhetoric were said to be needed.
He expressed these views during his maiden address in the capacity of Punjab IG to the Police Darbar at Police Lines, Rawalpindi.
Cops have to change attitude with public for image-building: Capt (R) Nawaz
Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer (RPO) Ahmed Ishaq Jehangir; Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Abbas Ahsan; District Police Officers (DPOs) of Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal; senior Police officers of Rawalpindi Range as well as Station House Officers (SHOs) and other officials were present on this occasion.
Punjab Police IG said that as many as 54,000 police officers and officials faced disciplinary action due to various violations every year.
Still, the performance of the police force was not satisfactory, he added.
Capt (R) Nawaz, thus, believed that police would have to improve their performance and change attitude with the public.
He maintained that senior police officers should also adopt a “police” attitude towards their subordinates.
In case of any violation, they should take disciplinary action instead of misbehaving with them. The subordinates should also follow the instructions of their seniors and not give them any complaint so that they do not face any disciplinary action, he noted.
The IG remarked that he was working as the father of the police department and was taking measures to improve their packages and salaries.
He said police would hopefully get good news regarding the unfreezing of their 2009 Risk Allowance. After listening to the officials’ grievances and proposals, he laid a wreath of flowers at the memorial of martyrs.
