The World Press Freedom Day was celebrated here at the Serena Hotels at an event which also discussed the current challenges faced by the media besides media’s potential in supporting peace and reconciliation processes.
Senior journalists from all prominent print and electronic media organisations were invited to an exclusive get together, followed by a cake cutting ceremony.
The World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993. Since then, May 3 is celebrated worldwide as the World Press Freedom Day. This year’s theme was ‘Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation’.
The hotel management praised Pakistani media for its positive role in the times of conflict. A tribute was paid to all those journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The management also highlighted various community welfare projects being undertaken as a part of diplomacy programme, and invited the media to visit Karighar training and vocational centre in Gilgit Baltistan which trains and empowers the less privileged women of the area, along with a honey bee farming project that has financially empowered the local honey bee farmers to a great extent.
