PTI leader and former Punjab health minister challenged on Tuesday the victory of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from NA-130 in the Lahore High Court (LHC). Rashid challenged the PML-N supremo’s win in the LHC election tribunal and prayed that his victory notification be declared null and void. LHC’s Justice Sultan Tanveer Ahmed will hear the appeal. Nawaz won the NA-130 constituency by a significant margin and bagged 179,310 votes against Rashid’s 104,485 votes. The PTI-backed candidate challenged the results soon after the February 8 polls and asserted the election tribunal results to be declared illegal. However, the tribunal dismissed the plea and maintained Nawaz’s victory. Prior to the polls, the election appellate tribunals gave a clean chit to members of the Sharif family to contest the general elections after dismissing appeals filed by PTI leaders challenging the acceptance of the nomination papers for Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, and Maryam Nawaz. The election tribunals, comprising 12 judges of the LHC, adjudicated appeals filed by candidates challenging the decisions of the respective Returning Officers regarding the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers. The appeals against the Sharif family centred around the acceptance of nomination papers for Nawaz Sharif from NA-130, Shehbaz Sharif from NA-132, and Maryam Nawaz from NA-119.
