The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday refused to remove Nawaz’s name from the title of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Four separate petitions for cancellation of PML-N’s registration were submitted to the ECP, following a Supreme Court ruling stating that disqualified persons couldn’t head political parties. The petitioners sought cancellation of party’s registration with the ECP on the pretext that a party cannot continue to work with the name of Nawaz Sharif, a person disqualified from holding public office by a court of law.
While announcing its verdict that was reserved on Tuesday, the ECP rejected the petitions filed by Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, Abrar Hussain Raza and two others, and allowed Nawaz’s name in the title of his political party, meaning the party can continue to work as Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
