MULTAN: Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture (MNSUA) Vice Chancellor Dr Asif Ali spoke at a seminar on the significance of organic food that has evaded contamination by chemicals.
The seminar entitled ‘Consultation on Punjab Organic Farming Act 2016’ was held in collaboration with the Pakistan Dehqan Assembly – a platform of small farmers to discuss their policy and development issues. The seminar aimed at getting feedback from stakeholders and taking necessary steps for placing laws against the adulteration of foods.
In the west, the rise in genetically engineered food has been met with a counter culture movement calling for the labeling genetically modified organisms (GMOs) – something not endorsed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Various researchers and animal trials have shown GMO’s and chemically treated foods to have mutative effect on the DNA which might lead to diseases like cancer.
Speakers present at the occasion included Director Cotton Punjab Dr Sagheer Ahmad, Dr Hameedullah from Mango Research Institute (MRI), DO Agriculture Extension Chaudhry Naseer Ahmad, Assistant Director Agriculture Information Naveed Asmat Kahlon, central president Kissan Board Dr Dil Bagh, and representatives from the agricultural sector.
