LAHORE: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran on Tuesday organised a pollution study group that endeavoured to research the underlying reasons behind deteriorating environmental conditions within the province.
A national seminar entitled Smog: Formation, Impacts & Mitigation was held at Al Raazi Hall in PU. The event was orchestrated by College of Earth and Environmental Sciences (CEES), PU in collaboration with SEAL.
Expressing his concerns for the detrimental effects of smog in Lahore, he placed the blame for its escalated level on India.
Dr Kamran stated that the environmental research committee was composed as a result of various university departments joining hands against a common enemy. He hoped that this venture would be equally successful as his institution’s previously organised dengue research group that made several scientific predictions which helped the government to curb the epidemic.
Satellite Monitoring Group SUPARCO Head Shoaib Shafiq shed light on the differences between smoke, cloud, fog and smog through satellite images and briefed about instruments used by SUPARCO to detect weather conditions.
The smog in Lahore has been known for plaguing school children with asthmatic side effects as well obstructing vision for vehicle drivers and pedestrians.
